This is the independent regulator of the UK’s  financial services industry.  The FSA has rule making powers, investigatory powers and enforcement powers.  They have  a dedicated consumer helpline.

Office Of Fair Trading
The OFT’s purpose is to make sure the markets work well for consumers.  They also have the task of enforcing consumer protection regulations and competition law, and of making the markets as open and fair as possible so that consumers have the most choice available.

DirectGov
The government’s central online service giving advice and information about public services in England and Wales.  Covers everything from motoring to money in one place.

HM Revenue & Customs
The UK’s tax authority, responsible for making sure the correct tax is paid by individuals and businesses.  THey deal with direct taxes, indirect taxes and also pay out some types of benefits.

Debt Advice

Debt Advice Foundation

A debt advice and education charity offering impartial advice for people concerned about debt, loans and bad credit problems.  They offer advice on everything from debt consolidation to bankruptcy and have a free debt helpline.

Credit Action

A national money education charity that publishes in-depth monthly statistics on UK debt levels.

Citizens Advice Bureau

Your local CAB office will give you independent advice on debt, money and legal problems.

National Debtline

Independent debt advice telephone service with separate offices across the UK.

Consumer Credit Counselling Service

A debt advice charity that offers free debt advice over the internet and over the telephone.
